Grading policy, Math 130

We will have two hour exams each worth 10% of your grade, a final exam worth 20%, occasional quizzes worth 10%, and homework worth 50%. The homework is the bulk of the grade, but you must also do well on the exams - your grade for the course will be at most one letter grade higher than the grade you achieve on the exams, and a low enough F on the exams will get you an F in the course. The course may demand six hours of your time per week outside of class for reading the textbook and doing homework in the computer lab, so be prepared to work hard.

If you are registered for Math 190, your final grade will be based on your homework.

Students are encouraged to work together on the homework in partnerships, as it is useful to be able to trade ideas and insights with your peers. But care is required in this electronic age to ensure that copying of other students' solutions doesn't occur. The name (or names, in the case of group work) of students on the homework informs the professor who did the composition, typing, and computing. Communication with other groups should be limited to conversations about ideas, so that when it comes time to compose your homework assignment, you are working from your own personal intellectual understanding of the problem at hand. This is meant to be beneficial for you, so that you will learn and understand the material, and perform well on exams.
