Died early, of a heart attack.
He was a big jokester -- he used to play a gag where he would grab his chest and
fall on the floor. And then one time it was real.
The index of births available through ancestry.com lists her name as "Blanche", not "Dorothy". So they must have misread some bad handwriting.
Marriage Notes for Fred Smith and Dorothy Gertrude GRAYSON-696
Fred and Dorothy had a cottage on Bass Lake in Pentwater, Michigan.
OK, not really that dramatic, but definitely something that was in the recesses
of my mind as I read last week that details were not known by many. I had
heard it growing up many times, but had to dig a little to remember what the
story was since it has been ages since even thinking about it. One of Jean’s
kids (Ray) has been collecting Danielsen stuff for years and filled in some
holes for me. Here goes:Magdaline was first married to Otto and they had one child Hakon. They lived
in Copenhagen (she was born in Kiln Germany). While married to Otto she was
fooling around with Hans (Hans and Otto were cousins, their fathers were
brothers). Hakon grew up thinking Hans was his real father. When Hakon was
one year old Hans and Magda fled to the US and ended up in New Jersey. I have
to find it, but there is a pic of them with the one year old Hakon in a
stroller in front of Coney Island. Magda possibly never got a divorce from
Otto. Hans died of leukemia when Marilyn was young but I don’t know exactly
when. When he died, Hakon and Magda sailed back to Denmark so Hakon could meet
Otto. He was pissed about it for obvious reasons until the day he died. At
that point is where the money started coming in yearly. Hakon rebelled and
began his flying career. Ok, not career. It was more like a group of guys in
an apartment, flew biplanes and partied hardy. I’ve got pics of him and his
buddies.Hans was a successful designer of Hartmann luggage in Chicago and Racine.
Hakon told me more stories of the pranks he would play while working at
Hartman’s culminating with when he was complaining about working there,
Virginia said “well, why don’t you just quit?” as he was walking out the door.
By 10:00 he was back in the house as was asked why he was back. He said “I
just quit”. This was the Depression with a couple of kids with no job and an
angry Virginia. Yeah, he was a bit impetuous to say the least!! At that point
he began repairing vacuum cleaners in the basement with pick up and delivery
for $1.-- Craig Riddle, 2021
I know that he never knew his birth father (Otto) who stayed in Denmark. As I
remember the story, his mother and I believe it was a cousin, Hans Peter (who were I believe having an affair) came to America when Grandpa was 3. His mother sat him down when he was 22 to tell him that who he thought was his father
was in fact not, and his birth father had just died in Denmark. The birth
father had set up a trust and apparently had some serious bucks (or
whatever!!). From that point on until right before his death, he received a
yearly stipend from the trust. They had a regular lawyer based in
Copenhagen who conducted all of their business. I remember Grandma staying
up late (that was a BIG thing) so she could talk to him with in their
business hours. It was upon learning of the deception that he ran away to
fly planes. He and a bunch of guys had an apartment for quite awhile,
flying their biplanes during the day and partying at night. We had many
hours of conversations about what was. So yes, I guess I do know a little
background!--Craig Riddle June 2010
Rumor has it that she (Magda) was sent to the U.S. from Denmark, pregnant with Hakon and that she was pregnant from an affair with someone in the royal family. Hakon received money from Denmark for his whole life. I remember them anxiously waiting for the money every year. Hakon was referred to by family members as the bastard king.

He pronouned Hakon as ``hay-kon''.From an interview with Craig Riddle, 2013: Hakon was an American patriot, who always stood up for the national anthem. He was a car freak, and kept his car in such good repair and so clean that you could eat off the engine. He tended to drive too fast. Craig has his certificate of citizenship from 1931. He quit his job building steamer trunks at Hartman Trunk in Racine and went into business for himself as a vacuum cleaner repairman, when the four girls were young.
He was a pilot, and flew biplanes with four buddies, just for fun. Each flight would be followed by a party.
After marriage, they moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1931.

"Aline" was the name of Una May's best friend.
Virginia had a large doll collection, mostly newer than 1940, about 1500 of them! She lives within walking distance of the Bay, in a three bedroom house, with a single palm tree, on a corner. She has sold Hakon's favorite 1956 T-bird to Sue Ungermann.
