J. B. CARLSON holds a prominent place within the community and church, and is in many ways a leader and a forerunner. Carlson is a tall and impressive man, wide shoulders, with a high forehead and big brown eyes. He is a happy and articulate man.
These are some of the details of his life: he was born in 1848 in Köinge parish, Halland, and in 1870 he and thirty young men went to the United States. His first occupation in this country was as a railroad worker in Pennsylvania. Two years after he arrived, he married Augusta Anderson from Williamsport, in Pennsylvania. She was born in 1851 in Falkenberg, Halland, and in 1871 she came to this country. She is an intelligent, friendly and hospitable woman, who faithfully has followed her husband in the many moves within this county that they have made, and has given the children a mother?s tender care and good upbringing.
In 1874, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Jamestown, New York, where Carlson and a brother in-law bought land, however he gave this up after only one and a half years. From Jamestown, Carlson moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and worked in a coal mine for a year. He then moved, this time to Pomeroy in the same state. He lived in that place as a farmer for sixteen years, until 1893, and he and his family belong to the Lutheran Elfsborg congregation in Pomeroy. In 1893, the family picked up and moved to the southern part of Texas, to El Campo. This place was a new colony, and the Swedish congregation was just starting to build a church. Carlson bought land here, and was the first in that area to have a well dug for irrigation of a rice field. Rice cultivation in El Campo has later proven to be a profitable venture. In 1902, he sold his property and moved back to the east coast, where he spent six years in Jamestown, N.Y. For the second time, the family moved to Texas in 1908, but this time to the northwestern part of the state where they are now living in the Ericsdale colony in Shackelford County, have a nice farm and a comfortable, beautiful home.
The marriage has been blessed with nine children: Carl, Ida, Lydia, Emma, Albert, Nellie, Florence, Ellwood and Effie. The son, Carl, is married to Christina Johnson from Jamestown, N. Y., and is living in Ericsdale. Ida is married to the pastor in the Augustana Synod, C. G. Samuelson in Mead, Nebraska. Nellie is married to Gustaf Ekdahl in Ericsdale, and Emma to Ludvig Rudine in Dallas, Texas. The family belongs to the Swedish Lutheran Church in Ericsdale, and Carlson is a deacon in the congregation and has been a leader in the congregation during vacancies, has led the services and other congregation meetings.

Death is a mirror in which you see
The way we all must go;
Death comes to you, He comes to me,
It matters not the age
He enters in, our setting sun
Is sinking quickly now.
And thus we stand beside the tomb
With tear stained face, and weary heart.
A prayer upon our lips today
Be with us here below,
Prepare us that we enter may,
Into thy home above.
