"Carol A. Livingstone, 68, of Fair Lawn, NJ and Ocean Grove, NJ passed away on December 10, 2023 surrounded by family after a valiant three-year battle with bone cancer.

Carol was born to Alfred and Doris (nee Hackenberg) Genton and spent her youth in Wood-Ridge, NJ.
On July 25,1981 she married James Livingstone and together they raised two sons, Brian and Scott.

Carol was an honor student and a 1973 graduate of Wood-Ridge High School where she was active in the National Honor’s Society, sports, and theater (starring as Eliza Doolittle in the school production of “My Fair Lady), and she played flute in the school band. She continued to pursue her interest in sports and fitness at East Stroudsburg State College (now East Stroudsburg University, PA), graduating in 1977 with a degree in Physical Education.

Carol built a rewarding and impactful career in physical fitness, first as a gymnast coach at Westwood High School, then as a Physical Education teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Edison, NJ. After she and Jim moved to Fair Lawn, NJ, she became the Athletic Director at Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, NJ. Carol subsequently left the formal workforce to start a family.

Carol’s extracurricular activities over the years were many and varied, including scouting (where she made many life-long friends), sports, and her passion for music, playing the flute, piano, and in her church bell choir. With a gift for organization, she joined friends for many years in hosting the neighborhood block party and was a long-time member of the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary.

Carol was extremely devoted to family and to others, serving as a den mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop and a class mother at their school: and she could be counted on to always be there for her two boys in the many sports they played. She was also a selfless, devoted, and amazing caregiver to her own mother’s long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
When her boys grew older, Carol resumed her career in fitness by teaching aerobics and exercise classes at the Ridgewood, NJ YMCA, where she went on to become the Health and Fitness Director. With dedication and commitment, she implemented and taught many programs that improved participants’ health and well-being through exercise and fitness, including the highly specialized and nationally renowned fitness program “Delay the Disease,” for those struggling with Parkinson’s Disease and the YMCA’s Livestrong cancer survivorship program. The success of these programs bolstered Carol’s commitment and resolve, as she witnessed an improved quality of life for participants in her programs, and, just as important, the positive impact on the quality of life for their family member caregivers. Her professionalism and caring were greatly appreciated by loyal following among Y members. She later worked as a fitness instructor at the Meadowlands Y and Valley Health System’s Center for Health and Fitness in Mahwah until she could no longer continue due to her illness.

Carol’s “happy place” was Ocean Grove, NJ, where she enjoyed reading and tanning on the beach and spending time with family and friends, as well as attending concerts and summer Sunday services at the Great Auditorium. She also loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with her family and vacations with her life-long friends from Wood-Ridge.

Carol is survived by Jim, her husband of 42 years, and their two sons, Brian of Portsmouth, RI, and Scott (and wife Chelsea) of Boonton, NJ, her sister Barbara Johnson (Ward), brother Thomas Genton (Sarah), and sister-in-law Carol J. Livingstone (Dan Grayson).

Carol and Jim are grateful for the support of friends, healthcare workers and caregivers during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Carol’s memory be sent to The Valley Hospital Foundation. Please indicate “Hospice” or “Valley Hospital Center for Health & Wellness” in the space labeled “Comments”.

Memorial visitation will be on Friday, December 15th from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Vander Plaat Colonial Home.
A Memorial Service and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Van Riper-Ellis Baptist Church, 7-01 River Rd, Fair Lawn, NJ."

Charles LIVINGSTONE

Alfred Livingstone document.  Salesman (I remember him bringing us a huge bag of Whip & Chill chocolate pudding.  Moved to California.

Loved sailing, crewed on sailboats all over the world.  Became a charter member of the Sausalito Yacht Club.  He donated a huge shark's jaw bones to the club, which named an annual competition "Jaws" after them.

Here is the wording of the announcement of his memorial service:
-----------------
We are deeply saddened to announce that our Father, Charles "Bud" Livingstone, passed away the morning of January 9, 2017.

He had been diagnosed woth metasticized cancer in September, where it was found in his lymph nodes, rib bones, kidneys, and liver. A short bout of chemo was effective to all but the kidney and liver cancers.  As you would imagine of Bud, he was strong and full of vigor until the last two weeks of his life when he agreed to home hospice.   He was always kind and full of his unique Livingstone charm, wit and humor until the very end.

He passed away into a stormy morning surrounded by the love of his two daughters and two grandchildren, at home, asleep and without pain.  His last words... "Oh! Hello!"

His Memorial Ceremony will be held on February 19, 2017, at the Sausalito Yacht Club in Sausalito, California, 3-4 pm.   Cash bar reception to follow.
