Edward LIVINGSTONE

Alfred Livingstone document.  Seen here with second wife Martha

1881 Census: Lancashire, Wigan, District 21
shows him at 34 Lorne St, age 7, scholar, living with his mother and grandparents

Census (1891, District 13, Wigan, Lancashire, England) shows
him living with his mother in his grandparent's home
at 27 Nevilla St., Wigan, age 17, occupation Drawer (coal mine).

Marriage certificate says he was 20, a bachelor, residing at 1 Bauer
(Bausy?) Street, Makerfield, Lancashire, England. His occupation listed on the marriage certificate was Collier, which is a coal mine worker.  He emigrated in 1900 (? as stated on the 1930 cenus, but he was in the 1901 England Census) or sometime before 1903 (when his wife and children emigrated to join him), and his occupation was listed as an engineer. According to Susan Williams, he traveled back and forth between England and the US often -- I wonder if this is perhaps because of his job as a saleman for an engineering firm. After Charlotte died, he married Martha Chatterly, widow.
He later became president of the Board of Education in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey. In 1903 he resided on at 170 16th Ave., Patterson, and later at 269 Hamilton Avenue in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey.

His WWI draft card
at age 45 lists occupation as Engineer/Salesman, employed by the Jewel Engineering Co, 140 Market St, Patterson; his residence was
717 14th Ave., Paterson. Closest relative was son Walter Livingstone, living at the same address. Edward was listed as short (5'4"), 155 lb., with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

Social Security Death index says his SSN was 157-09-0034.

1930 census shows him living at 269 Hamilton Ave., Paterson with Martha, her daughter Lucy, Lucy's husband Charles Norburn, and Lucy's daughter Rita.

His obituary, saved by grandson Charles, read:

March 18, 1963

Before retiring, he was president of the Jewel Engineering Company and the British American Chemical Company, both of Paterson.   He formally made his home at 269 Hamilton Ave.

Born in Wigan, Lancashire County, England, he was a Paterson resident since 1903.  Active in business, civil and fraternal affairs, he was a member of the Board of Education from 1921 to 1930.  Besides serving as President of the School Board, he also had headed the New Jersey Federation of Boards of Education.

He was a member of Paterson's Grange Lodge 43 F & AM and he was a Master of the Fraternal Group in 1912 & 1913.  He was a charter member and former Secretary of Fidalis Masonic Lodge 243 which he helped organize.   He was also a member of the New Jersey Grand Lodge of the Masonic Order.

He leaves three Sons, Fred of Paterson, Walter of East Paterson and Alfred of Fair Lawn, retired Eastside High School physical Education teacher, eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  Another son Thomas died last year.

Charlotte WINSTANLEY

Siblings: Ted, Thomas, Mary-Jane, Elizabeth, Bell, Fred

Ellis Island web site: traveled on Etruria, arrived Oct 3,1903 from Liverpool

Marriage is noted p. 73, vol. 8c, Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of
the marriage register of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, England, district of Wigan.

Charlotte was listed as a Spinster, age 19, residing at 17 Old Hall Street, probably Makerfield, Lancashire, England.

Note: the wedding of spouse Edward's parents was witnessed by a
Lee Winstanley, relation is unclear.

1901 Census, District 44, Wigan, Lancashire, England, shows
her as head of household, a widow (sic), age 28, residing
at 44 Duke St, Wigan, with children Walter (8), James (4), and Alfred (1).
Susan Williams believes that the census taker likely did not know or
believe her husband was alive and traveling in the US and so recorded her
as a widow.
