ROYAL BAYREUTH CAPTIONS Written and Photographed by Richard and June Grayson (Tom: please use either #1 or #2 to go with the story) (Objects in #1 and #2 are from collection of June Grayson) 1. Which are real Royal Bayreuth? Top row: l. and r. - turkey salt and pepper shakers, which I bought Christmas, 1990, at one of our local jewelry stores. No permanent marks, however, each one has a gold and black label saying: hand painted, C Otagiri, Japan. Middle figure is a moose pitcher, many of these are around at modest prices between $5 and $40.00. This one is stamped Austria on the bottom. Other stamps you will find are Vienna and Germany. Royal Bayreuth made many elk figurals, antlers are different. Second row, l. to r. 3 piece mustard server, no mark, not RB, wrong shape, also some authorities say that RB never used gilt for trim. Grape sugar, black mark RB, fairly common, also made in many other serving pieces. Lobster and shell pitcher, especially nice coloring to the shell, not marked. The dealer who sold it to me insisted it was English porcelain in his family a long time. No doubt it was bought it England as RB made export china for England and used green mark. Similar to one pictured on plate 20 of A GUIDE TO ROYAL BAYREUTH FIGURALS by Joan and Marvin Raines. Bottom row, l. to r.: flower pitcher, probably not RB, good porcelain, but painting not precise, no mark on bottom, but word "Germany" is impressed on one side horizontal with bottom. RB teapot, blue mark, Bavaria. Poppy basket, no mark, but should be RB, look how exquisite every detail is, with no discordant lines or colors. 2. Same assortment of object, depending if you want vertical or horizontal picture. Get caption from #1. (objects in slides #3-7 are from collection of Mary McCaslin) 3. RB kangaroo creamer, rare, similar to the one that sold for $1,000 at the Woody auction, August 1990. 4. RB lady bug and beetle pitchers, same mold, but decorated differently. 5. Butterfly pitcher, marked RB, how exquisite. 6. RB tapestry. vase and ? and ?, marked RB. 7. RB marked pitcher and cup and saucer from a chocolate set, pearlized finish, evocative also of R. S. Prussia. (objects in slides #8-#15 are from collection of Dorothy Kliebhan) 8. RB 8" pitcher, Victorian hat ladies. 9.
